Condition of Instance (notable traits, context, etc.)
When I came upon this occurrence, I was initially too close to see it's true glory. I was in a mode of looking for forgotten remnants and hidden gestures; like an emo kid, I was staring at the ground and saw what seemed to be the uprooted feet of an old gateway. But stepping back to find a better angle from which to capture the second half of the pair of roots, I realized it was not the roots that was the Thomasson, but the lack of a forest; there was a solidly-built, three-door gate left impotent by the fact that the expanse of pathway next to it was left gate-free like a 0-2 count followed by an intentional base on balls. A building denizen informed me that it had been left that way for years with no apparent intention to complete the barrier; further inspection showed that the existing doors are locked.

Optimist:
I feel like the gate is half open, rather than the alternative.

Dave:
Yes, a totally pointless, useless artifact; and it is locked. How wonderful.
